Spring Trolling for Atlantic Salmon on Torch Lake

Spring on Torch Lake is one of the most exciting times of the year for anglers targeting Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, and Lake Trout. As the water begins to warm and baitfish become more active, the fish spread throughout the water column and aggressive trolling patterns can produce incredible action. Long runs, aerial jumps, and screaming drags make spring trolling on Torch Lake an experience every angler should have at least once.

At Fish With Jim Outfitters, spring trolling is all about covering water efficiently and dialing in productive presentations. We use a combination of planer boards, downriggers, and slide divers to target fish at multiple depths and distances from the boat. This spread allows us to present baits naturally while maximizing the amount of water we cover during the day.

Planer boards are a huge part of our spring setup, especially when fish are cruising higher in the water column near shorelines and warming flats. Running baits away from the boat helps reduce spooking fish in Torch Lake’s incredibly clear water and allows us to fish multiple lines effectively. Downriggers help us precisely target suspended fish deeper in the water column, while slide divers excel at covering mid-depth zones where active salmon often roam during changing conditions.

When it comes to lure selection, silver-based, copper based and painted based presentations are key in the clear blue waters of Torch Lake. Some of our favorite producers are Silver Streak spoons in both the Jr Streak and Mini Streak sizes. Their action and flash imitate the small baitfish that Atlantic Salmon feed on throughout the spring season. We also run a variety of custom-painted hard baits from 131 Custom Lures, including Shadow Raps, Rapala Original Floating Minnows, and Scatter Raps. These baits provide a unique action that often triggers aggressive reaction strikes from salmon and trout, especially during low-light conditions or when fish are feeding heavily near the surface.

One of the best parts about spring trolling is that no two days are exactly the same. Fish can be shallow one morning and suspended deeper the next, making versatility critical. Speed changes, lure color adjustments, and constantly monitoring water temperature all play a major role in staying on active fish. Some days the bite is best on spoons fished high off planer boards, while other days deeper presentations on downriggers or slide divers dominate the action.

Torch Lake itself adds to the experience. Known for its crystal-clear water and incredible scenery, it provides anglers with a fishing trip that is as visually impressive as it is productive. Whether you are an experienced troller or someone looking to experience Great Lakes-style fishing for the first time, spring offers some of the most consistent action of the year.
