Fishing Atlantic Salmon Around Freighter Traffic in Detour Passage

One of the most unique and exciting aspects of fishing Atlantic Salmon in Detour Passage is the influence of massive lake freighters moving through the St. Marys River system into northern Lake Huron. These enormous ships do far more than create an incredible backdrop for fishing photos — they actively influence fish behavior and can create some outstanding salmon opportunities for anglers who understand how to fish around them safely and effectively.
At Fish With Jim Outfitters, freighter traffic is something we pay close attention to during our Atlantic Salmon destination trips in the Detour and Drummond Island area.
As freighters move through the passage, their massive propellers churn the water and stir up the bottom, displacing baitfish, insects, and other food sources. This disturbance creates feeding opportunities that Atlantic Salmon quickly take advantage of. In many situations, the turbulence and current generated by these giant ships can concentrate fish and trigger aggressive feeding activity.
One of the keys to success is fishing close to the freighters — but never too close. Safety always comes first, and understanding how to work around shipping traffic responsibly is critical. By staying a safe distance away and targeting the edges of the churned water and prop wash, anglers can take advantage of the feeding activity created by the ships without interfering with commercial traffic.
The prop wash behind freighters often creates highly oxygenated, turbulent water that attracts bait and active salmon. Working these disturbed areas after a freighter passes through can lead to explosive bites from aggressive Atlantic Salmon feeding in the current.
To target these fish effectively, we rely on a traditional Atlantic Salmon trolling spread designed to cover multiple sections of the water column. High lead core setups ranging from 1-color all the way to 10-color lines are a major part of our program. These lines allow us to cover suspended fish high and mid-depth in the water column where Atlantic Salmon commonly feed.
We also run slide divers and downriggers to expand the spread and target fish holding at varying depths depending on water conditions, bait location, and current flow. Keeping presentations spread out and covering water efficiently is extremely important in this constantly changing fishery.
When it comes to lure selection, spoons remain the top producers. Some of our favorites include Silver Streak spoons, Michigan Stinger spoons, and Dreamweaver spoons in a variety of bright and high-contrast patterns. These spoons perform exceptionally well at the faster trolling speeds typically used for Atlantic Salmon and create the flash and erratic action needed to trigger reaction strikes in the clear waters of Detour Passage.
One of the most exciting parts about this style of fishing is the unpredictability. One pass behind a freighter may produce screaming Atlantic Salmon runs, while the next could produce Steelhead, King Salmon, Lake Trout, or even Walleye. The constantly changing water movement and bait activity create opportunities for multiple species throughout the day.
Combined with the incredible scenery of Drummond Island, open Lake Huron, and massive freighters navigating the shipping channel, this is truly one of the most unique trolling experiences the Great Lakes has to offer.
