Torch Lake Atlantic Salmon FishingFishing Torch Lake (Best times ice out - May, November - Ice)

Imagine a huge Lake Michigan tributary that has twelve inland lakes and connecting rivers that are full of game fish.  That’s precisely what the Chain O’ Lakes offers its visitors.  Come fishing for Land-Locked Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, Whitefish and more on your trip to Torch Lake.

Atlantic Salmon, Lake Trout and Brown Trout can be caught on Torch Lake after ice out. Smelt, cisco and other baitfish look for warmer water to begin their spawning migration.  The presence of the baitfish triggers the game fish of Torch Lake to hunt the shallow water and top of the water column making a fishery that can be trolled with traditional open water trolling gear.

As the summer heats up the surface temperature to the mid 70’s the gamefish of Torch Lake move offshore and can be caught over deep water at a variety of depths.  Use our scaled down traditional Great Lakes big water trolling techniques on Torch Lake using substantially lighter gear with spoons, crankbaits, live bait and more.  While fishing Torch Lake fit is not uncommon to catch Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, Lake Trout and Rainbow Trout.

Torch Lake also has a very good fishery for the Vertical Jig fisherman.  Use many of the same techniques and tackle that are used during the ice fishing season to catch Lake Trout, Whitefish, Burbot and more.  We call this "Video Game Fishing" as you watch your lure work and the fish bite on our high end fish finder.  Fish depths of up to 280 ft from "Ice Out" through June and feel the fish slam our high quality jigging rods!

Grand Traverse Bay Lake Trout FishingFishing Grand Traverse Bay (Best times June-September)

When fishing Grand Traverse Bay we primary fish out of Elk Rapids as it is several attributes that attract big numbers of fish.  The Elk River is a unique river system as it is the outlet for the Chain of Lakes and is a great spawning area for salmon, steelhead, brown trout and more.  Within two miles of Elk Rapids, Grand Traverse Bay reaches depths of up to 600 feet and has two distinct shelfs that holds great numbers of Lake Trout complimented by migratory runs of Brown Trout, Cisco, Whitefish, Salmon and Steelhead.

Lake Trout, Brown Trout and Cisco fishing on Grand Traverse Bay begins shortly after ice out when the gobbies and other baitfish look for warmer water to begin their spawning migration.  The presence of the baitfish triggers the Brown Trout, Lake Trout and Cisco to hunt the shallow water making a near shore fishery that can be trolled with traditional trolling gear.  Fish crystal clear water that is less than 20ft and often see the fish prior the bite.Grand Traverse Bay Cisco Fishing

As the summer heats up the surface temperature to the mid 60’s the Brown Trout, Lake Trout and Cisco move offshore and can be caught in 80 to 250ft.  Learn how to adjust traditional Great Lakes big water trolling techniques to Grand Traverse Bay by using substantially lighter gear with spoons, crankbaits and live bait.  While fishing Grand Traverse Bay it is not uncommon to catch Steelhead, Salmon and Whitefish.

Lake Trout, Cisco Whitefish can be caught year-round on Grand Traverse Bay using vertical jigging techniques.  Our boat is equipped with the Minn Kota iPilot that allows us to virtually anchor over feeding Grand Traverse Bay Salmon Fishingfish in depths up to 600ft.  We present traditional ice fishing spoons to the fish that we are marking on our Lowrance HDS 8.  We like to refer to this type of fishing as "Video Game Fishing" as we watch the movements of the fish and our jigs right on the fish finder.

Salmon and Trout fishing on Grand Traverse Bay begins when migratory runs of King Salmon, Coho Salmon and Atlantic Salmon begin to gorge themselves before they run the Elk River in Elk Rapids.  These fierce predators begin to show up in August and can be caught through November both in the Grand Traverse Bay and the Elk River.

Mullet Lake Rainbow TroutFishing Mullet Lake (Best times August-September)

Mullet Lake is part of the Inland Waterway, part of a chain of lake that can be boated 38 miles from Crooked Lake and Round Lake near the Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan across the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula to Cheboygan on Lake Huron.  Mullet Lake Is one of the most overlooked inland lakes in Northern Michigan for large Rainbow Trout and Walleye.  Catch both of these prized species in the same trip as we troll the drop-offs and the deep open water of Mullet Lake.

In the spring the Rainbow Trout are finishing their annual spawning runs up the tributaries of the Inland Waterway.   When the fish re-enter the lake they are greeted with a buffet of baitfish that are attracted to the warmer water on the shoreline.  The presence of the baitfish triggers Rainbow Trout, Walleye and other game fish of Mullet Lake to hunt the shallow water and top of the water column on the open water.  As the season goes on the Rainbow Trout and Walleye will seek out deep water and will suspend near the thermocline making a fishery that can be trolled with traditional open water trolling gear form spring - fall.
