The Grand River

Vermilion River WaterfallThe Grand River is located in northern Ohio and is a tributary of Lake Erie. Today, the river follows an odd course that was influenced by the glaciers. The headwaters of the river can be found in Portage and Geauga counties. From there, the river flows north through Trumbull County and into Ashtabula County. In the northern part of the county, the river begins flowing westward into Lake County before dumping into Lake Erie.

The section of the Grand River from the Harpersfield Dam to Lake Erie is designated wild by the State of Ohio. Here, steeply incised valley walls of Chagrin Shale characterize the river. A view of the river in this area is truly spectacular especially following spring and fall showers when waterfalls cascade over the steep shale bluffs.

The Grand River and its tributaries offer steelhead anglers the most diverse atmosphere from downtown fishing to backwoods hiking. The bottom varies from hole to hole with clay, slate, sand and great gravel. This river has plenty of trails through the endless parks to explore, plenty of wildlife, and a great bottom composition. Lake Erie steelhead flock to the Grand River because is offers a desired shale to gravel ratio making it a perfect habitat for steelhead to spawn and winter. It has classic riffle and pool areas, solid holes that range from 3 to 15 feet deep, and cut shale banks. Great gravel and pools and moderate amounts of shale are distributed throughout the system, but most anglers target the lower sections shale and holes with less gravel but solid depth and great cuts.

The Grand River has something for everyone. It can be fished with many different techniques and tackle options. It gives anglers a chance to fish any preference and still be productive.
