The Ashtabula River
The Ashtabula River is a fine steelhead river this is approximately 40 miles long and empties into Lake Erie at the city of Ashtabula. The name Ashtabula is derived from an Iroquois Indian name meaning “river of many fish.”
The Ashtabula River has just about every river situation one can ask for with one of the most beautiful settings. This heavily forested river has plenty of trails through the public parks to explore, plenty of wildlife, and a great bottom composition made of shale. The gradient is very good so you will find plenty of classic riffle and pool areas and solid holes that range from 2 to 6 feet deep, and cut shale banks. Lake Erie steelhead love "The Ash" because is offers a desired shale to gravel ratio making it a perfect habitat for steelhead to spawn and winter.
Access is great because it has one large metro park and many other access points down stream from the ford. If you hike a bit, you can be by yourself staring at a prime steelhead river and the wildlife that surrounds. Many fishermen fall in love with "The Ash" for its beauty and productive waters. For these reasons Fish With Jim Outfitters offers quality steelhead trips on this “river of many fish.”
